If this is your family’s first time in Coromandel, consider camping near one of the beautiful beaches here on the peninsula for a change.
There are many campsites and holiday parks in Coromandel that are family-friendly. These campgrounds usually have powered and non-powered campsites, as well as cabins, lodges and cottages.
What can you expect from holiday parks in Coromandel?
Most of these campgrounds are similar in their setups. Holiday parks in New Zealand are usually located either near a beach, lake, or inside a regional park. Here are the basic facilities and amenities you can expect in a holiday park pretty much all across New Zealand…
Family cabins, baches, and studios are on one section of the site. Powered sites and non-powered sites are on another. Communal kitchen, dining room, and laundry are provided for campers. Restrooms and showers usually require a code or key for guest access. Most holiday parks also have a playground area for kids, and the newer developed campsites have small pools as well.
In this post, we will share our review on our family’s favourite Hahei Holiday Resort and our travel vlog on our stay at Whangapoua Holiday Park to give you an idea of what it’s like to be camping in Coromandel.

Where to Camp in Coromandel
You may be overwhelmed by the number of campgrounds in Coromandel at first, but once you plan out your itineraries, it’ll be so much easier to decide where you want to set up your base. We can divide the peninsula into 4 major sections that are popular with attractions and worth a stay.
- The Eastern side of the peninsula where Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach is.
- The Northeastern side of the coastline near Whangapoua and New Chums Beach.
- The Western side of the peninsula along the coast surrounded by many beautiful bays, and in close distance to Driving Creek.
- The Northern tip of the peninsula where it’s more remote, uncommercialized, and nestled in pristine untouched nature, like Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay.

Hahei Holiday Resort
Most travellers would stay near Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. These are the highlights of Coromandel and being among the top things to do here. One of the best holiday parks our family has stayed at regularly is Hahei Holiday Resort.
Hahei Holiday Resort is a fantastic holiday park that provides all the facilities for a comfortable stay. It’s only footsteps away from Hahei Beach, perfect for a morning and evening walk accompanied by mesmerising sunrise and sunset.

The communal shower has a basin and bathtub for washing babies, this has made our lives so much easier showering our little one each day. The BBQ facility is very well maintained and clean, it’s right beside a playground for parents to keep an eye on the little ones while cooking. The communal fridge is very spacious, there is plenty of room to store your groceries, don’t forget to mark your bags! There’s a water tap on our campsite, which is gold when it comes to camping! Hahei Holiday Resort is one of the most modernized holiday parks we’ve come across in Coromandel.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a great holiday park with comfort and up-to-date facilities, book a stay at Hahei Holiday Resort. It is near the top attractions in Corodmandel and sits right next to a beautiful beach.

Whangapoua Holiday Park
If you love white sand beaches, you may have heard of New Chums Beach – one of the world’s top 20 best beaches on the Observer’s list. The closest holiday park to New Chums would be Whangapoua Holiday Park.
Many do not know, there are rare and endangered New Zealand shorebirds on many of the beaches around here. You can pick pipis (small cockles) at Whangapoua beach during low tides and cook them back at your campsite.
So if you plan to unwind and have a relaxing time on some of the best beaches in Coromandel, this region is away from the crowds and a great place to experience the real New Zealand.

Whangapoua Holiday Park has a kids playground onsite, our toddler has taken over the trampoline during our stay, and that is enough to keep her happy. The kitchen and communal areas are clean and well maintained. We can sense the site managers really care about this holiday park to keep it clean.
We have stayed at one of their cabins, as well as a non-powered campsite during our time in Coromandel. The cabin is very comfortable, equipped with its own basic kitchenware, and very close to the communal bathroom. Our campground is a little far from the communal area, but it is quiet and peaceful. If your budget allows, we recommend staying at one of their cabins.

We have just checked into our cabin for Kyra’s 2nd Christmas! She’s busy exploring the new place and trying out her new bed. She wakes up with presents from Santa, and her favourite of all – a bubbles machine!

Hot Tips
- If your destination is underdeveloped, on an island or you only travel occasionally, consider booking with the hotel or guesthouses directly. In some cases, you’ll receive much better rates plus you’ll support local businesses and provide an opportunity to connect with them for better services.
- If you’re a frequent traveller that stays in hotels often, we recommend sticking with one hotel booking site/app to reap the benefits of its loyalty program.
- Always do your price comparisons as some sites like Hotels.com may have already priced your loyalty discounts in the room rates.

The loyalty program offers lifetime memberships and there are many accommodations that participate in the Genius program which gives out perks & discounts as you level up.
You can see the rates on all the hotel booking sites at a glance and compare the prices from there.
How to plan a trip in 30 minutes
I used to use Trivago, Kayak, Kiwi etc but nowadays, Google does such a good job finding the latest rates, I no longer use hotel comparison sites.
